Gunter Lindstrom is an unseen character in the 1985 NBC sitcom The Golden Girls. A farmer from the small town of St. Olaf, Minnesota, Gunter and his wife Alma adopted Rose Nylung when she was a baby and raised her alongside their biological children. He is the late husband of Alma Lindstrom, the late father of Lily, Holly, Michael, and five other biological Lindstrom children, and the late adoptive father of Rose Nylund.

Though Gunter was mentioned several times on the show, he only appeared in a dream that Rose had in "A Little Romance", where he was portrayed by the late Billy Barty.

Personality and Traits[]

Gunter never made a genuine physical appearance on the show, so his personality can only be put together through stories that other characters have told about him.

Rose mentioned that Gunter was "very caring and ignorant", as he refused to let Rose go to her high school prom with British exchange student Cyril Mountbatten and was adamant that a relationship with Cyril wouldn't work on account of the "language barrier".[1]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Gunter was born to the Lindstrom family in St, Olaf, Minnesota in 1896. He married Alma Gorkleknabygenshöffstädlerfeil, and they had eight biological children; daughters Lily and Holly, and six sons,[2] one of which was named Michael.[3]

Adopting Rose[]

Between 1930 and 1938, Gunter and Alma adopted a little girl from the St. Olaf orphanage. They named the baby Rose, and took the spicy beefsticks that she was left with as part of the deal for adopting her.[4]

Rose remarked that neither of her parents made her and her siblings feel like they were less important than the other eight, and that they would have the best Christmases complete with her father playing Christmas carols at the piano, her mother making homemade eggnog, and the family decorating the tree.[5]

Legacy[]

Gunter only appeared on the show once, but it was in a dream Rose had that did not reflect his actual physical appearance in life. In the dream, he was a little person and Rose acknowledges the discrepancy when she says she didn't remember him being so short. The dream Gunter informs her that he appeared in that form to advise Rose to be open to an expected proposal from her boyfriend, Jonathan Newman, who was a little person.[6]
