Mrs. George Devereaux is the ninth episode of the sixth season of The Golden Girls and the one-hundred and thirty-seventh episode overall. Directed by Matthew Diamond and written by Richard Vaczy and Tracy Gamble, it premiered on NBC-TV on November 17th, 1990.

Summary[]

Blanche decides to meet a secret admirer and is shocked to discover it's her dead husband, George. Dorothy finds herself in a love triangle with Sonny Bono and Lyle Waggoner.

Plot[]

Rose and Sophia walk into a kitchen filled with roses sent to Blanche from a "secret admirer." Dorothy also walks in showing off two bouquets she received, but quickly pales in comparison to the amount of flowers Blanche received. Rose then reads that the bouquets Dorothy received were sent from Sonny Bono and Lyle Waggoner when she caught their eyes at a dinner theater production of Equus, and the girls are in disbelief that two celebrities are trying to court Dorothy at the same time. Blanche then announces that she will be meeting her secret admirer for lunch. Worried that Blanche is meeting a stranger, the rest of the girls offer to tag along, which Blanche happily agrees.

At the restaurant, Dorothy finds that Lyle Waggoner has followed her there to woo her and ask her out on a date, to which she declines due to being overwhelmed. The maitre'd then announces to Blanche that someone from the bar is there to see her, and she excitedly gets ready to meet her secret admirer. A man then arrives as Blanche turns around, and to everyone's shock, Blanche is horrified by what she sees. When the girls ask why Blanche can't believe what she sees, she answers: the man is her dead husband George Devereaux.

The girls catch up to Blanche at home after she stormed out of the restaurant. With George in tow waiting to speak with Blanche, Dorothy advises Blanche to hear him out and that she believes he is indeed the same George that Blanche had married. As Dorothy forces the other girls out to the lanai to give Blanche privacy with George, Sonny Bono arrives to beg for Dorothy's love, only to be told to leave so she can make a decision between him and Lyle. George explains to Blanche that he had staged his death nine years ago due to finding out his business partner was embezzling from the family business, and that fault was being pointed to George and he was on the verge of his company collapsing and facing disgrace. He admits it was terrible to hide from his problems, but asks Blanche if she would let him be her husband again. She gives him no answer.

Later that evening, the girls console Blanche. She is angry about being deceived, and the other girls in turn share anecdotes about when they were deceived by men. Frustrated, Blanche shares that she would sometimes have dreams about George not being dead and happily reuniting with him, but her dreams never let her embrace George and ends with her waking up thinking he was sleeping right next to her. She declares that she wishes he never returned this morning and he was better off dead.

The next day, Lyle and Sonny show up at the house at the same time, both asking Dorothy which of them she would choose to be with. The two get heated insulting each other, and begin fighting before a policeman abruptly breaks them up, announcing that Lyle is to be arrested for being a prime suspect in a crime spree. When asked where, the policeman answers, "Palm Springs, California," alluding to Sonny Bono's current stint as mayor of that city and using his influence to falsely accuse Lyle as a criminal. Dorothy ultimately chooses Sonny, claiming she could not resist his status and power as Lyle is hauled away. As Dorothy leaves with Sonny, Blanche comes out, claiming she is waiting for a date to pick her up and that she is embracing her old self without George. She is taken back by Rose and Sophia's apathy, and Rose explains that Blanche is wasting a second chance that all the girls, being widowed, will never get. Rose advises Dorothy to give George an answer whether she loves him or not anymore, for the sake of them all.

Blanche has George meet her in her room to talk. She surprisingly asks for George's forgiveness, saying she regrets the last thoughts of him before learning of his fate was that she hated him for leaving his shoes out for her to trip over as she answered the phone call about his alleged accident. They then reminisce about how they first met, which rekindles Blanche's love for George and they embrace together. The scene is cut short, however, and reveals that Blanche had been dreaming all along. The girls come into her room after hearing her talking in her sleep, and console her for her seemingly recurring dream of George. Blanche says that this time it's different, as she was able to hug George before the dream ended. As the girls bid her goodnight and leave the room, Blanche bids George goodnight in the dark.[1]

Tall Tales[]

Because this episode is almost entirely a dream, the information in these tales is to be considered dubious.

Back in St. Olaf...[]

Rose talks about The Amazing Shaprio, St. Olaf's most famous OB/MAG. He delivered Bridget, but he kept confusing Rose by switching Bridget out with various objects, eventually making Bridget appear after a card trick.

Clinton Avenue Memoirs[]

SOphia lets slip that in 1946, Dorothy pretended that she was dating the quarterback and was going to her school's Junior Prom -- instead, she spent the evening hiding in the basement slow-dancing with a rake. She almost got away with it, but while giving herself hickeys with a vacuum cleaner, she stepped in a puddle.

Tales from the Old South[]

George and Blanche talk about how they met at their university's club cotillion. When their eyes first met, Blanche knew George would be the only one for her. She sent her fiancé off for some punch and asked George to dance. George said the pleasure would be all his, and Blanche said she knew it.

Picture It...[]

Sophia tells another story about when she was a spy for a summer in 1922. She was sent to Germany to meet a man of science, and they carried on a love affair until it fell into shambles due to a deception -- the man of science wasn't actually a man.

Main Cast[]

Guest Stars[]

  • George Grizzard as George Devereaux
  • Sonny Bono as Himself
  • Lyle Waggoner as Himself
  • Todd Jeffries as Policeman
  • Brad Keopnik as Maitre'D

Notes[]

  • This is the second time Sonny Bono and George Devereaux are involved in the same episode. In "An Illegitimate Concern", George's illegitimate son visits the house in search of his father at the same time Sophia and Dorothy dress up as Sonny and Cher.[2]
  • While the details regarding George's death vary throughout the series (e.g. being killed instantly in a car crash versus dying after being in a coma for days), this episode seems to confirm that he died in 1981 without any other episode refuting it. However, given that most of what happens is part of Blanche's dream, this might not be true.
  • Sophia greets Sonny and Sonny calls her his little Mama Celeste. Sophia hates Mama Celeste because she stole a pizza recipe from her.[3]

Goofs[]

  • Lyle Waggoner tells Sonny Bono that he was never married, but he was married to Sharon Kennedy from 1961 until his death in 2020.
