Sid Melton (born Sidney Meltzer on May 22, 1917 - November 2, 2011) appeared in eight episodes of The Golden Girls TV series, six as Salvadore "Sal" Petrillo, the late husband of Sophia Petrillo, and two as Don the Fool; he als appeared in six episodes of Empty Nest in bit roles, in except for one episode "A Chip Off The Old Charley" where he appeared as Mr. Parker. A veteran comedic actor and entertainer, Sid, who made many guest TV series over the course of his long entertainment career, also appeared in two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and four episodes of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. He played recurring characters in the TV series "Captain Midnight" (as Ichabod "Ikky" Mudd), "Make Room for Daddy" (as Uncle Charley Halper), "Green Acres" (as Alf Monroe) and "The Golden Girls" (as Salvadore Petrillo). His film appearances include Shadow of the Thin Man, Body and Soul, White Heat, On the Town, The Lemon Drop Kid, Designing Woman, The Joker Is Wild, The Geisha Boy, The Tunnel of Love, The Buccaneer, Alias Jesse James and Lady Sings the Blues.

Personal lifeEdit

Melton was married once, in the 1940s, but the marriage was annulled. “After that”, said his brother-in-law, David Lawrence, “he kept dogs, mainly wire-haired terriers.” In 2005, he attended Eddie Albert's funeral along with Green Acres co-stars Mary Grace Canfield and Frank Cady.

DeathEdit

Melton died from pneumonia on November 2, 2011, aged 94. He was interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, California.
