I can't say for sure, but I think Sophia's brother Angelo has a last name mentioned in one episode, so it's been extrapolated from that. He was in 6 episodes so this will require about 3 hours of research by someone!
IMDB only lists the character as "Uncle Angelo" so this might not be it, though.
According to Susan Harris and Paul Junger Witt in a Paley Television Festival interview, Sophia's maiden name was never revealed, as they thought it unnecessary ("Petrillo" was a name unique from the other three protagonists on the show). I watch The Golden Girls every day on DVD, which includes all scenes deleted from TV (I've seen every episode probably 80-100 times), and I can assure everyone that her maiden name has never been mentioned, nor was Angelo's surname.
P.S. I know this forum is months old, but I felt I had to throw in my hat of GG knowledge. I hope someone sees this and that it helps them. ~Lord Laitinen~
Thanks so much, Lord Laitinen! Looks like we have some editing to do on here.
Do you have an online source of that interview? Video/audio or a transcript? If they got into detailed questions like this, then it sounds like there might be more good info to mine from it.
Sorry, I don't know about an online source. I remember seeing the interview during the Golden Girls special back in 2003, though this topic may have been mentioned in the interview in the special features of the Season 6 DVD, as well. Most of the topics discussed were about behind-the-scenes events, how the "Golden Girls" concept began, and how talented Susan Harris was at re-writing scenes or whole episodes in a matter of hours.
