Three on a Couch is the eleventh episode of the third season of The Golden Girls and the sixty-second episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Christopher Lloyd, it premiered on NBC-TV December 5th, 1987.
Summary[]
Constant bickering leads the ladies to seek professional counseling from a psychiatrist.
Plot[]
The ladies decide to go to group therapy after they have been arguing nonstop for weeks. While visiting Dr. Ashley, each character flashes back to situations where another woman has irritated them.
Selfish Blanche[]
Dorothy insists Blanche is selfish, she tells the story of when she was sick, Blanche still expected her to double date, Dorothy clearly was unable to sit up let alone speak to some stranger and after passing out from her fourth toddy Blanche admits to Sophia, Dorothy's date won't mind he turns out to be a biker that did time for arson.
Dumb Rose[]
After Rose complains they all call her dumb, Sophia gives a example, Dorothy got Rose to put an ad for her in the paper, however after a strange guy comes from reading the advert, however Rose finds it she put it in the Personals, after several men came in, Blanche tells Rose she can't do anything right, resulting in Rose calling her Norwegian insults.
Critical Dorothy[]
Blanche and Rose insists Dorothy is critical about everything. The example they give was that they rented Alien and are trying to sleep in Dorothy's bed while she was trying to revise for a test, so Sophia kicks them out.
Sophia the Shrink[]
Sophia says she's the glue that holds the group together, she talks about the time she solved all three girls problems with the same story, yet she is feels that she is under-appreciated and that's her complaint.
At first, Dr. Ashley says domestic issues can be solved by hard work and cooperation. However, he quickly claims the women are all totally incompatible with each other. Through this touch news, Sophia sits down all the other women and gives them a lecture that tough times are simply living. They finish the night by eating and bonding over their usual cheesecake.[1]

Sophia tells the girls a story about a young peasant girl whose pepperoni goes missing. She comes to a raging river with pepperoni swimming upstream, even though pepperoni is a land meat. This supposed “act of god” is revealed to have been the result of a disgruntled factory worker who had blown up a nearby pepperoni factory causing the meat to rain all over the place -- which is where the old Sicilian saying, “It’s raining cats and pepperoni” comes from.

- Based on her promise to the priest, Dorothy would be saying Hail Marys from the time of the flashback until 1990, when the film Dick Tracy was released.
- Sophia tells Blanche "You know what I can’t stand any more, that phony accent of yours. What is this, Designing Women?" Blanche is from Atlanta, Georgia which is where Designing Women was set.

- Philip Sterling previously starred as Dr. Barensfeld in "End of the Curse".[2] Additionally, Terry Wills previously appeared in "Second Motherhood" as Lou the Plumber.[3]
Goofs[]
- When Dorothy passes out in the flashback, her arm is propped up on the couch. When Blanche approaches her to put a pillow under her head, her arm is back down. Then after the pillow is placed under her head, her arm is propped back up.
